Michel Beaucage takes us to the heart of the Orient through his unique works, which boldly merge the energy of American gestural painting with the spirit of ancient Chinese calligraphy. Inspired by his many travels to China, the artist evokes in his own way the costumes of the Peking Opera, the rhythm of a musical score, and the freedom of colour liberated from the line.
Each work in the SÉQUENCES ORIENTALES exhibition reads like a flipbook, assembling a succession of paintings on rice paper to create the illusion of continuous movement. Glued onto the canvas, these sequences of images draw us into a meditative narrative chain—a series of space-time fragments—where we oscillate between America and Asia.
A prolific painter and printmaker with an international career, Michel Beaucage explores various mediums and techniques in his pictorial work. He has also developed a unique process using rice paper to create transparency effects reminiscent of glass and ceramic glazes. Drawing inspiration from automatism and lyrical abstraction, he has forged a powerful and original body of work, where colour, texture, and free gesture take precedence.
