Presented as landscapes, Geneviève Dupont-D.’s paintings and collages highlight the sensitive relationship between us and the space we inhabit. At a time when our ecosystems are increasingly crumbling due to our collective actions, Érosions depicts fragmented places that break apart and dissolve.
From the very start of her practice, Geneviève Dupont-D. has been interested in the relationship between land and the people who inhabit it. Inspired by spaces that evolve over time, it was only natural for her to continue reflecting on current environmental issues and on the role humans play in this reality.
For several years, the artist has used the symbol of the house to represent the human being in all their individuality. In this new exhibition project, the house motif becomes omnipresent across several paintings. Subtly rendered, the silhouettes of dwellings seem to fade away. The world as we know it is eroding.
This work explores the dialogue between memory and place by combining elements of painting, collage, and silkscreen printing. The printed and collaged elements are removed from their original context to reconstruct a new space. This process reinforces the idea of landscape within the abstract compositions. Created through the accumulation of numerous layers of washes, the paintings are divided by geometric lines that fragment the space. Evoking a horizon line, a mountain, or a dwelling, these divisions also represent what divides and weakens us.
