ANDRÉ FOURNELLE
MARK THE TERRITORY
ANDRÉ FOURNELLE
MARK THE TERRITORY
Multidisciplinary artist
Opening on Sunday, April 3, from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
André Fournelle is a multidisciplinary artist renowned for his sculptures, his performances, his installations in art galleries and also for his works in situ in the environment and with nature.
In the Marking the Territory exhibition, sculptures made with raw or natural materials such as barbed wire, pure pigments and charcoal reveal the artist’s vision of social issues. Charcoal is embedded in symbolic shapes often connoted as the cross, the diamond, the spiral. The artist also follows a constant path using the fundamental natural elements of fire, water, earth and air.
His sculptures and installations, both permanent and ephemeral, show his sensitivity to human fragility and his deep-rooted social commitment. Since the beginning of his prolific career, this humanist and indignant artist has produced works resulting from innovative practices. His artistic vision undeniably contributes to the advancement of the arts.
Here is a rich, constant and coherent production that marks the memory and the territory, both in Quebec and abroad. The works you see here have been presented at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, at the Galerie Clara Maria Sels in Düsseldorf (Germany), at the Chapelle des Brigittines in Brussels (Belgium) and at the Hôtel de la Monnaie in Paris, France).
André Fournelle received, in the fall of 2021, the highest honor granted to artists by the Government of Quebec, the Paul-Émile-Borduas prize.
