2D Art Photography

Day 2 : Sunday, February 9th, 2025

Time : 11 am to 4 pm

Cost : Free for workshop participants (1 hour upon reservation)

In this workshop, we’ll look at the technical fundamentals of controlling light and color when shooting your artwork – drawings, oil or acrylic paintings, collages and more -whether framed or unframed, small or large format. We’ll also look at the various tools available for processing photos of artwork so that they best represent your creations and are suited to the use you wish to make of them.

DAY 1
Part 1 : Theory

  • Understand the technical basics of photography for reproducing artwork.
  • Assimilate the notions of photographic colorimetry, light colours, shooting speed, and a look at photographic retouching software.

Part 2 : Hands-on demonstration

  • Easily set up a reproduction studio with simple equipment.
  • Use cameras and telephones to achieve satisfactory archival quality.
  • Transfer images to a computer and perform basic manipulations to finalize your photos.
  • Work directly on a phone if a computer is not available.

Part 3 : Practice

  • Photograph one or two of your works to familiarize yourself with the techniques demonstrated.

DAY 2

The equipment used on the first day will be made available (at a time to be determined), so that participants can photograph several of their works with the assistance of the instructor. Interested participants must reserve their time slot with the teacher on Saturday. This hands-on training is free of charge. Arts Sutton welcomes voluntary donations.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Alain Laforest

  • Architectural photographer since 1974
  • Photographer, then Head of Photographic Services at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA)
  • Co-founder of the Maison de l’architecture du Québec
  • Lecturer in photography at the Université de Montréal School of Architecture.

While working at CCA Photographic Services for over thirty years, Alain Laforest photographed the architectural works of numerous firms (Atelier Pierre Thibault, Saucier+Perrotte, Atelier in situ, Atelier Big City, among others). Six of the projects he has photographed have been awarded Governor General’s medals, and 16 others have received awards of excellence from the Ordre des architectes du Québec.

He has produced important photographic documentation for the City of Montreal, the Quebec Ministry of Culture and other organizations (Quartier international de Montréal, CDPQ head office, heritage buildings in the Mount Royal sector, etc.). His contribution has been recognized by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), which named him an honorary member.

He has exhibited personal work at the Centre de design de l’Université du Québec à Montréal (Montreal, Brussels, Bordeaux), at the Maison de l’architecture du Québec and at Château Dufresne. He has also curated exhibitions on photography, and his work has been published in several books, international journals and newspapers.
