En territoires féminins
Sculpture | Photography on canvas
Opening
Sunday, February 3 from 2 pm to 4 pm
The recipient of a Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec grant for her project Territoires féminins, artist Amélie Pomerleau’s work explores the nature of the shell. Included in that concept is the protected, sacred space of the female and the scars that women bear. Through her work with ceramics and photography, she positions women at the centre of history, according them a place of honour that is far too often given over to males. It was her work with pond shells that gave rise to her concept of a second skin—the Earth’s crust hardened to bear witness to the human experience. By using measurements that mirror the actual size of our bodies, Amélie Pomerleau’s sculptures produce vivid impressions that create solid bonds with her public.
Her artistic identity centres on an amalgam of feminist, rural and maternal forces. Stories in the news stimulate her finely tuned sensitivity about the injustices that women face, and these very real events and experiences echo throughout her art.
Her life’s journey to date includes extensive studies in the arts (i.e. a bachelor’s degree with a major in sculpture from Concordia University; a diplôme d’études professionnelles (DEP) in stone masonry; and specialized courses and training provided by renowned Italian, French and Québécois(e) teachers working in the areas of design, sculpture, sandblast etching, stone masonry, pottery and moulding/modelling.
The Gallery is open Thursday to Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm.
